Po Lin Monastery, Hong Kong

Po Lin Monastery is a Buddhist monastery located on Ngong Ping Plateau, on Lantau Island, Hong Kong. It was founded in 1906 by three monks visiting from Jiangsu Province on the Chinese mainland and was initially known simply as "The Big Hut"; the main temple houses three bronze statues of the Buddha – representing his past, present and future lives – as well as many Buddhist scriptures. Tian Tan Buddha, a giant Buddha statue completed in 1993 (also featured in the blog), is an extension of the monastery.

Lantern Fly, Hong Kong

It is hard to believe that this creature is a type of fly isn't it..? It is a kind of a lantern fly - its long and and slender proboscis is used to pierce tree bark to reach the sap. I thought it very interesting-looking so I tagged for it, thank you Manyee :)

On the stamps another kingfisher, this time a common one; and a wise Collared Scops Owl, native to south Asia parts.

Yellow Seahorse, Hong Kong

This wonderful seahorse card was sent by dear fellow-postcrosser Yuen, and am also thrilled with the zodiac signs stamps, which have the reigning planets as attachments! Thanks so much Yuen, this is such a great postal item :))

For info I will quote what is written at the back:

'Yellow Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda) is a common resident of Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park. Females may be yellow in colour while males may be grey/brown. Both sexes display spots on the body. The species is commonly found entangled in coral communities and sargassum beds. It can change body colour according to the environment and it relies on its camouflage for defence.'

I have this pile of postcards waiting to be scanned for some time...and when I've found out that the theme for todays Sunday Stamps is China (and Taiwan) I wondered why not add Hong Kong too...as I really wanted to post this one anyway :)

YOTD - Hong Kong

Another great dragon card, this time from Yuen from Hong Kong! I must admit i enjoyed these yotd swaps being mainly with people with whom i swapped before :) this card has prepaid postage but also the 'fiery' additional stamp, which on the closer inspection looks bizzare - would love to know its meaning..!

Yuen was describing all the joyfull things people do to celebrate Chinese New Year's, and now i want to witness it myself somewhere, anywhere in china..! I think i would especially look forward to food, yum :)

This card is supposed to be torn along the lines, but i dont trust myself to do it. I think i may damage it, or that it will become 'just a card' then - i think i'd much more prefer it as a postcard. but i AM curious heh. Thank you Yuen - and if you ever read this, perhaps you could tell me if i should have opened it straight away..!

Barn Swallow, Hong Kong

Tian Tan Buddha, Hong Kong

Tian Tan Buddha is also known as The Big Buddha; the statue was completed in 1993 and located at Ngong Ping (near the Po Lin Monastery), Lantau Island in Hong Kong. It symbolises the harmonious relationship between man and nature, people and religion. Standing 34 meters tall, its the 2nd largest sitting Buddha statues in the world  (it doesnt come close to the 1st on the list - The Great Buddha Of Thailand is staggering 92m high..!)

As Manyee/memymanyee wrote on the card: some people say, since this Buddha was built there are fewer typhons in Hong Kong. May that good vibe continue! :))
