A Honky Tonk In Nashville

Another whiskey-related card from Bryon...And is apt to post these days. Why? I'll tell ya, in a bit of a promotional sense :)

This week the 34th International Blues Festival took place in Memphis, Tennessee. My 24-y-o niece is a singer in a local blues-rock band, which won the country's Blues Challenge, and was sent off to Memphis. Pretty cool, eh? It was the band's first performance outside Croatia, and my niece's first trip outside Europe, so you can see its all a bit exciting for everyone involved :) The band spent a few days in Nashville, where they visited Jack White's Third Man Studio, and did more extensive recording in the renowned Dark Horse Studio. Without much further ado, here I present the band's first video :)

Bourbon Balls Recipe

Anyone up for some Kentucky bourbon balls? :D I sure would love to try some, if I was able to host some fellow bourbon enthusiasts. Though I think they'd also be appreciated by anyone with a 'sweet tooth' :) I have recently found another bourbon recipe, for a full-on creamy cake; this card reminded me to print it and try it this week when I get home. And the stamps? Must I even say how fantastic they are? Bryon spoiling me yet again...thank you thank you thank you :))

Whiskey Prescription

Now this is something interesting, and completely new to me! Thanks to Eric, who also used great stamps incl. prohibition and pharmacy theme, and not a reptile but equally welcome salamander :) 

As found on the 'Spirited Republic' web-site:

Alcohol is often thought as the cause, rather than the cure, to many ailments. However this wasn’t the case during  Prohibition; the Volstead Act allowed for an exception for the medicinal use of alcoholic beverages by patients who obtained a prescription from a licensed physician, or for religious reasons. 

Whiskey became the new wonder-drug, reported to be useful in the treatment tuberculosis, anemia, pneumonia, and high blood pressure, among other disorders. Adults were allotted one ounce every few hours after parting with $3—equal to about $40 today—to a local practitioner. The new law required prescription pads which were issued by the U.S. Treasury Department, the records of which are held by the National Archives.

This example was referred to a certain I.F. Johnson in 1924.

To this day I am certain that whiskey cures, if anything it eases the mind..!

Woodford Reserve

And now for something totally delicious..:) and something that has been on my mind for the last few months...I have always been a fan of whiskey, but it has only been this year that I've decided to buy a book about it, and oh my so little did I know about this 'water of life'! I could write a whole essay on things thought and learnt right now, so better just keep it short and say: thank you Bryon for this addition to my whiskey collection :)) as a matter of fact I have bought a woodford reserve bourbon on my way back from ny, but I'd surely love to try this rye too some day..!

Jack Daniel's Rye

 

A surprise whiskey card - thanks Bryon! Havent tried JD's Rye yet, but  after discovering their Honey Bourbon...my world hasnt been the same :)

I have always wanted to include these in Sunday Stamps, and with today's open theme the time has come...three from the USPS set of 5 Arctic Animals stamps issued in 1999, showing grey wolf, arctic hare and arctic fox (other two being snowy owl and polar bear). Can animals be more beautiful than this? Its very sad to think their natural habitat is shrinking fast...

Jack Daniel's Old No.7

As I havent blogged for a little while and missed last week's Sunday Stamps I've decided I should post something today no matter what..! This week's theme is Colourful Stamps, and I am starting with this delicious raspberry wonder from Finland ( there was a pink-theme a while ago too that i had to miss ). I am a big fan of JD, I wonder how these two would go together..?!

Currie's Whisky, Scotland

We are in Perth but not as far as Australia - rather in central Scotland, where we visited on a day trip from Edinburgh. A vintage reprint of a whisky ad was a great find! Does google suck or is there really so little info on this online..?

Kentucky Mint Julep

A wonderful surprise, two bourbon cards from Kentucky! Or rather the recipe for Churchill Down's signature drink Mint Julep, which consists of bourbon, water, sugar, mint leaves and crushed ice. Sounds like a perfect drink for these humid summer nights! I'll have to find some mint leaves somewhere ;) Thank you plenty Bryon!! And for the gorgeous animal stamps too :)

Paddy Old Irish Whiskey

Paddy Whiskey is Ireland's third best selling whiskey, first produced in 1779 in Cork. It is distilled three times and matured in oak casks for up to seven years. Its high malt content ensures the smoothness that I'd surely love to try! Amazing shaped card that travelled straight from its country of origin, beautiful Ireland. Thank you so much Desiree!!

Kentucky Bourbon Cellar

Ahh I am in love with this scene...as weird as it may sound, if you gave me one choice of a travelling destination in the US, I would choose Kentucky :)

95% of the world's bourbon is distilled and aged in Kentucky - though ironically the world's top-seller is Jack Daniels; but because JD insists on just being a sour mash Tennessee whiskey perhaps it is not counted in this statistics. Any other whiskey made by the same standards only outside the US is not allowed the bourbon name. Because its such a fiiiine product I will shut my eyes to this display of megalomania heh.

A new-found American friend is living just a few miles from the Kentucky border, and he told me yday he witnessed an opening of 40-y-o I.W.Harper, which is supposed to be one of the finest. I was and still am so envious! And he thought it tasted like **** hahhh :)

Whiskey Day!

Whiskey/Bourbon cards are among my favourites - simply because i enjoy the products in real life :))) I can't even remember when i tried my first whiskey; but please attribute that to my poor memory, rather than the possibility that i have drank spirits since the days of yore!

'Jack Daniels is a brand of sour mash Tennessee whiskey that is among the world's best-selling liquors' The distillery claims a founding date of 1866. Although it should be classified as a straight bourbon, the company chooses to market it simply as Tennessee whiskey.

Jack Daniels is a favourite of mine (or one of ), and of many people i know.
Thanks to Wanda from Poland, this fine card is now a part of my collection :D

Crown Royal is a blended Canadian whiskey; it is the top-selling Canadian whiskey in the United States. The distillery is situated on the shore of lake Winnipeg, Manitoba. The story says that this whiskey was devised especially for King George VI to soothe his severe tootache! This is also why it was/is packaged in a crown-shaped bottle and dressed in a royal purple bag.

I have never tried this whiskey - in fact i have never seen it in croatian stores. But next chance i have to visit the brilliant Whiskey Store in London, i will look for it :) esp as i'm tempted by the fine 'recipe' on the back of this card..!

Grant Whiskey

I was very excited when i tagged *cherity* in an offer tag and realised she has a whiskey-ad card! I was actually aiming at an israeli view or culture postcard, but considering how difficult whiskey cards are to come by i thought i'll just grab the chance :) Awesome stamps too!
