UNESCO - Archaeological Site Of Carthage, Tunisia

Carthage was founded by Phoenicians in the 9th century BC on the Gulf of Tunis. From the 6th century onwards, it developed into a great trading empire covering much of the Mediterranean and was home to a brilliant civilization. The ancient city was destroyed by the Roman Republic in the Third Punic War in 146 BC then re-developed as Roman Carthage, which became the major city of the Roman Empire in Africa.

UNESCO - Medina Of Tunis, Tunisia

Under the Almohads and the Hafsids, from the 12th to the 16th century, Tunis was considered one of the greatest and wealthiest cities in the Islamic world. Some 700 monuments, including palaces, mosques, mausoleums, madrasas and fountains, testify to this remarkable past.

UNESCO - Kairouan, Tunisia

The Great Mosque of Kairouan is also known as the Mosque of Uqba and is one of the most important mosques in Tunisia - it was established by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi in 670 AD at the founding of the city of Kairouan, and is one of the oldest places of worship in the Islamic world, as well as a model for all later mosques in the Maghreb.

Kairouan flourished under the Aghlabid dynasty in the 9th century, and despite the transfer of the political capital to Tunis in the 12th century it remained the Maghreb's principal holy city.  It is an important centre for Islamic and Quranic learning, and thus attracting a large number of Muslims from various parts of the world, next only to Mecca and Medina.

UNESCO - Medina Of Sousse, Tunisia

Sousse is a city in Tunisia situated on the eastern coast - the Medina of Sousse is a harmonious archaeological complex that reflects Arabo-Muslim urbanism applied to a coastal town exposed through its history to piracy and dangers from the sea. In front of the picture is the Ribat of Sousse, having both military and religious functions, and is largely unaltered since the 9th century; in the background is the impressive Kasbah.

This lovely view was sent to me by Tunisia's future honorary citizen Judit who is spending holidays in Tunisia year after year, I can see why! Hvala ti puno Judit, prekrasni su mi i razglednica i markica :))

UNESCO - Amphitheatre Of El Jem; Dougga / Thugga, Tunisia

The impressive ruins of the largest colosseum in North Africa, a huge amphitheatre which could hold up to 35,000 spectators, are found in the small village of El Jem. This 3rd-century monument illustrates the grandeur and extent of Imperial Rome. 

The town of Thugga flourished under Roman and Byzantine rule, but declined in the Islamic period. The impressive ruins that are visible today give some idea of the resources of a small Roman town on the fringes of the empire.

I am surprised that I havent posted cards from Tunisia before...especially as my dear postcrossing friend Judit sent me multiple cards from her second home country ;) Shukran Judit!
