A new country for me, received last autumn - The Bahamas is an island country in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, consisting of more than 3000 islands. The Bahamas were the site of Columbus' first landfall in the New World in 1492; they were orriginally inhabited by the Lucayans, but became a British Crown colony in 1718. The country became an independent Commonwealth realm in 1973, retaining Queen Elizabeth II as monarch.
